There is no scientific evidence linking exposure to 9/11 dust and diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis. That doesn't stop the press and politicians from leaping to conclusions.
Take the case of New York Police Officer Cesar Borja, the police officer whose son was a guest of Senator Clinton at the State of the Union only hours after his father's untimely and premature death from lung disease.
Officer Borja became a symbol of the second round of 9/11 victims. The press said that he rushed downtown to rescue office workers on September 11. Now it seems that Officer Borja was not sent to the site until the end of December and served fewer than 20 shifts. These details matter.
Even though high levels of exposure to the dust are not linked with the lung disease that killed him, the claim that such exposure killed Officer Borja becomes even less plausible given how much time went by before he was assigned to the World Trade Center area. The air there became significantly cleaner as the days, weeks, and months went by.
Politicians and many in the press, though, are rushing to judgment and making expensive, rash decisions based on misplaced sympathy rather than sound science.
Politicians have vowed to spend over $1 billion on people presumed to have mysterious lung disease caused by the World Trade Center collapse, inspired in part by public sympathy for figures like Officer Borja and World Trade Center site cleanup worker and nun Sister Cindy Mahoney, who died from another form of lung ailment.

Sounds being heard 9/11 from the planes.... quotes
 
During this time, there apparently are no calls from Flight 93. Several cell phones that are left on record only silence. For instance, although Todd Beamer does not hang up, nothing more is heard after he puts down the phone, suggesting things are quiet in the back of the plane. [Longman, 2002, pp. 218
 
The only exception is Richard Makely, who listens to Jeremy Glick’s open phone line after Glick goes to attack the hijackers. A reporter summarizes Makely explaining that, “The silence last[s] two minutes, then there [is] screaming. More silence, followed by more screams. Finally, there [is] a mechanical sound, followed by nothing.”

Todd Beamer. [Source: Family photo]After having some trouble getting authorization to use an Airfone to call his family, passenger Todd Beamer is able to speak to Verizon phone representative Lisa Jefferson, with the FBI listening in. He talks for about 15 minutes. Beamer says he has been herded to the back of the plane along with nine other passengers and five flight attendants. A hijacker, who says he has a bomb strapped to his body, is guarding them. Twenty-seven passengers are being guarded by a hijacker in first class, which is separated from the rest of the aircraft by a curtain. One hijacker has gone into the cockpit. One passenger is dead (that leaves one passenger unaccounted for—presumably the man who made a call from the bathroom, thought to be Edward Felt). The two pilots are apparently dead. [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 9/16/2001; Newsweek, 9/22/2001; Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 10/28/2001; Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 10/28/2001; Boston Globe, 11/23/2001] A conflicting version states that 27 passengers were in the back, and that Beamer saw four hijackers instead of just three. [Boston Globe, 11/23/2001] It is not clear if Tom Burnett’s first class section group is in contact with Todd Beamer’s coach section group or if there are two independent plans to take over the plane.

At the same time the police and fire department units complained that they had no working radios, the phones where out in other areas but the calls went out and in how? ( When there is normally a fire the electric goes out including phone transitions ) - D'Anne Burley
 
Well its my opinion that since this was a MOCK ACTIVITIES involving a so-call terror drill would include using passengers as part of the exercise.
 
In this case the passengers and or those are involved in the mock drill would meet and be in a room etc and act as if they were in a very real attack! Again these exercises go on and these are the formats to produce a very real effect drill. Therefore maybe some of the passengers in these cases were told at the Airports to play in a game which would explain why there were transmission from cells and other devices which would not would within these conditions.
 
In addition during the transmission there were not reports of luggage being thrown about within the cabinet and depressed air issues because these planes where flying at over 500 miles an hour the cabin would had pressurization and those folks who were alleged standing could not and there would had been more noise than what we heard and was told.

A former Reagan official has issued a public warning that the Bush administration is preparing to orchestrate a staged terrorist attack in the United States, transform the country into a dictatorship and launch a war with Iran within a year.
Paul Craig Roberts, a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, blasted Thursday a new Executive Order, released July 17, allowing the White House to seize the assets of anyone who interferes with its Iraq policies and giving the government expanded police powers to exercise control in the country. Roberts, who spoke on the Thom Hartmann radio program, said: "When Bush exercises this authority [under the new Executive Order], there's no check to it. So it really is a form of total, absolute, one-man rule." "The American people don't really understand the danger that they face," Roberts said, adding that the so-called neoconservatives intended to use a renewal of the fight against terrorism to rally the American people around the fading Republican Party.
Old-line Republicans like Roberts have become increasingly disenchanted with the neoconservative politics of the Bush administration, which they see as a betrayal of fundamental conservative values.
According to a July 9-11 survey by Ipsos, an international public opinion research company, President Bush and the Republicans can claim a mere 31 percent approval rating for their handling of the Iraq war and 38 percent for their foreign policy in general, including terrorism.
"The administration figures themselves and prominent Republican propagandists ... are preparing us for another 9/11 event or series of events," he said. "You have to count on the fact that if al Qaeda is not going to do it, it is going to be orchestrated."
Roberts suggested that in the absence of a massive popular outcry, only the federal bureaucracy and perhaps the military could put constraints on Bush's current drive for a fully-fledged dictatorship. "They may have had enough. They may not go along with it," he said. The radio interview was a follow-up to Robert's latest column, in which he warned that "unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the U.S. could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran." Roberts, who has been dubbed the "Father of Reaganomics" and has recently gained popularity for his strong opposition to the Bush administration and the Iraq War, regularly contributes articles to Creators Syndicate, an independent distributor of comic strips and syndicated columns for daily newspapers, RIA Novosti reports.

Read these letters concerning the issue of Verne Sinn and others who are elderly within the state of Illinois whose family members were placed in homes control my states and wrap back in the courts whereby the home and private property of the elder is Illegally conveyed into the hands of the courts and then transferred to people who are being alleged by many that steal the private items and sell them and the land and or homes are transfer to others who rent them out and or sell them to others in the twisted nightmare. I had Verne Sinn and others with these complaints on my program with no interest of those who take are tax dollars to investigate. There are laws on the books in Illinois to stop these issues which are to be investigated by those within the department of the Attorney General, States Attorney and elder Commissions but until this day no one did anything to investigate.
 
In Hinsdale Illinois I was a victim on the other side of the coin as being both Disabled taking the matter of a person who use false name and information to rent a home which was not within her ownership! In addition this person had many different names and then use false and fake information to have me evicted!
 
The Du page Courts allowed this criminal matter to take place as did the 7th Circuit in violation of Civil Rights Codes. They refuse to hear my case with bias maybe because I was also Black, but read on and I have hundreds of victims who contacted me about illegally stealing the property of the elder and its being alleged that many seniors who are going into hospitals and transfered to other places because of their age are being murdered! This is what is being stated all over and its time we file a class action law suit to have this investigated

AARON RUSSO is dead after a long battle with cancer. Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, producer Aaron Russo began promoting rock and roll shows at local theaters while still a high school student. Cigarette Taxes over 300% in most states, Education taxes which are being used within the general fund for everything else is being moved into other ways and means to fund other operations the government redirects YOUR MONEY INTO because they have no more left in some of the agencies because they move it move in move it and redirect all because of lack of funds, and indeed how much are we spending for all this within the National ID which is NOT ABOUT LOOKING FOR TERRORIST because the TERRORIST are from within.
 
 
 
They Want to Get Rid of the Constitution by Passing this Law !
If there is a invasion of rebellion they can suspend your rights under Habeas Corpus therefore within the next coming weeks will they create this invasion to get rid of our rights under the Constitution so that they can enforce Presidential code 5.1 giving President Bush extreme power to impose Marshall Law?
 
   
 
By D'Anne Burley This is a matter of great concern to me because of the need to cover-up massive amounts of corruption from within our very own nation there is a great possibility that there will be another terrorist evetn launched within the US and abroad between now and July 7, 2007. If you go down the page within the journal there is a summit in Canada launched about all the crimes alleged to have been committed from within the very government of the United States that suspection has growth because of the recent law pass within this Whitehouse which will allow the President to remain in office if there is a major event of Terrorist launched against this nation. This law is the Presidential code 5.1 which gives the President full control of all military and rights to declare marshall law. Then on the backside the Defense Department is moving it's headquarters out of Washington in Virginia, again these moves the nature of international investigation of war crimes can denote a time to watch, stay out of populated areas and prepare for maybe another attack which will be used to cause something which will enact Marshall Law in this nation.
 
Remember NYC 9/11 it can and will happen again to cover up more!
Again there is too much for those who have hidden the facts about WTC 9/11/01 and Ok City to lose and if there is a crisis then they can make the public to believe another lie to coverup all the conspiracies used to down the United States Goverment from within.
The lack of jobs, destruction in Iraqi with the death tow over 650,000 and the lies and deceiption in the growing health emergency in New Yrok from all those who were on ground zero and all the people including our mititary men and women exposed to Du and other dangerous materials if once there is an investigation here and or probe then how much money will they lose in this/ Jail time and more.
So the best way to deal is to cover up with another crime, another act of terrorism one so great that it will take more than a centruy to recover from. Watch areas like, New York, Washington, Virginia, California, Chicago for these attacks and also within variousw areas of the goal.
There is too much at stake and they have a history of doing these covers to make sure no one will find out.

During this time, there apparently are no calls from Flight 93. Several cell phones that are left on record only silence. For instance, although Todd Beamer does not hang up, nothing more is heard after he puts down the phone, suggesting things are quiet in the back of the plane. [Longman, 2002, pp. 218
 
The only exception is Richard Makely, who listens to Jeremy Glick’s open phone line after Glick goes to attack the hijackers. Well its my opinion that since this was a MOCK ACTIVITIES involving a so-call terror drill would include using passengers as part of the exercise.
 
In this case the passengers and or those are involved in the mock drill would meet and be in a room etc and act as if they were in a very real attack! Again these exercises go on and these are the formats to produce a very real effect drill. Therefore maybe some of the passengers in these cases were told at the Airports to play in a game which would explain why there were transmission from cells and other devices which would not would within these conditions.
 
In addition during the transmission there were not reports of luggage being thrown about within the cabinet and depressed air issues because these planes where flying at over 500 miles an hour the cabin would had pressurization and those folks who were alleged standing could not and there would had been more noise than what we heard and was told.

BREAKING NEWSOld-line Republicans like Roberts have become increasingly disenchanted with the neoconservative politics of the Bush administration, which they see as a betrayal of fundamental conservative values.
According to a July 9-11 survey by Ipsos, an international public opinion research company, President Bush and the Republicans can claim a mere 31 percent approval rating for their handling of the Iraq war and 38 percent for their foreign policy in general, including terrorism.

There are laws on the books in Illinois to stop these issues which are to be investigated by those within the department of the Attorney General, States Attorney and elder Commissions but until this day no one did anything to investigate.
 
In Hinsdale Illinois I was a victim on the other side of the coin as being both Disabled taking the matter of a person who use false name and information to rent a home which was not within her ownership! In addition this person had many different names and then use false and fake information to have me evicted!
 
The Du page Courts allowed this criminal matter to take place as did the 7th Circuit in violation of Civil Rights Codes. They refuse to hear my case with bias maybe because I was also Black, but read on and I have hundreds of victims who contacted me about illegally stealing the property of the elder and its being alleged that many seniors who are going into hospitals and transfered to other places because of their age are being murdered! In addition I had bought to many of those within the office of the Governor Fraud and cases one of which included a home I rented within the town of Hinsdale which was ridden with fraud and illegally conveyance deeds which included people using fake names, obtaining property and using my information to get loans and other things whereby a Report/Journalist with a international audience was defrauded and victimized with no rights in and out of court because those involved used inside clout to make deals and property scams against not only the elder and seniors but against against People of Color again all of us had Civil Rights violations with no elected government office, board township official doing they're job. Because of what I am alleging using the private property and a horse to make lots of money involved in campaign finance, Again within the courts there is no system and or rights nothing just another venue where the trillons of tax payer dollars are missed used.
 
Because of all this criminal activity going on you now have bigger problems within the mortgage industry because of the lack of investigation and lack of investigation of allegation made by the elder, poor, handicap and everyone else how have become victim of these issues now is seems that there is a great gap in money because the system is now falling a part now there is a dialog because now the numbers of people complaining of all these things are greater than the crooks from within. The subsidiary, Kellogg Brown and Root, also blocked employees' attempts to inform the U.S. military at Camp Junction City in Ramadi that the water was foul or tell them that water tanks should immediately be chlorinated, the workers said.   They cited KBR's failure to test or treat the water in the latest in a series of hearings Senate Democrats have held on Halliburton , which was once headed by Vice President Dick Cheney and has huge contracts to provide services to the U.S. military in Iraq.   Halliburton said in a statement it had found ``no evidence to substantiate allegations made by these former employees.''   While bottled water was provided for drinking and cooking, the soldiers at the camp used the contaminated water for bathing, shaving and laundry.   ``We exposed a base camp populationto a water source that was not treated,'' said an internal e-mail from Will Granger, who was KBR's water quality manager for all of Iraq and Kuwait. ``The level of contamination was roughly 2x the normal contamination of untreated water from the Euphrates River,'' continued the e-mail dated July 15 of last year and released at the hearing. It said the exposure lasted for up to a year.   POLLUTED WITH SEWAGE   Ben Carter, a water purification specialist who worked for KBR at Junction City, told Senate Democrats that KBR officials had assured him the water was being treated.   But after Carter discovered a problem, he started tests and learned that the water drawn from the Euphrates and polluted with sewage and other contaminates, was not being chlorinated.   He said he treated the water tanks for KBR employees, and told company managers the military should be alerted to treat its tanks as well. ``I was ordered to concern myself only with the health and safety of KBR personnel,'' Carter said. Carter said KBR was supposed to test the water three times a day to confirm the presence of chlorine, but ``To my knowledge, such testing never occurred.'' Carter said he learned from Granger that similar problems existed throughout Iraq.   He said Granger told him the Junction City water was doubly polluted because the military, which operated the purification system at that time, apparently was taking waste water from the purification process and using it in the non-portable supply instead of dumping it back in the river.   KBR now operates the purification system.   |

Here is the point I am making you elect a politician who speaks out about the very core of corruption we talk about today. He has little money but has the trust of the people the goal is getting him elected. The people are there behind him in full force. Then he gets elected but the people leave him to the apple (the government who has been corruption and rotted out to the core!) he is alone, with only a few and told that if he don't do THINGS he will not be in long, they offer him money, trips, women, men, BOYS GIRLS and whatever else there is within a vice to corrupt him, the politician with a good heart sits there and goes to the people who campaign for him and then he finds out that those within his own camp are corrupt and hid within the many close within his circle are also a part of the core, they had invaded his world, he attempts to go to the people but they look at him to be to answer so he can not get there support because they feel just electing him or her is enough he is alone.
 
He has no power within his office, he has no control within his station within his elected office he is just a figure head, the next elect is coming soon and he knows the people are flaking off in support because he could not get his platform passed the one he was elected by due to the apple being rotten. He has little money is being watch by those within all involved in the industrial government money grab which nets them the rewards of NERO, they are NERO in the worse form, then are in a modern century but they are all acting as if they are within the roman senate doing all the same deeds as those within the time before Christ because they are godless and so full with the rewards that the industrialist have provided they can not see that they are becoming less and less human everyday. They are now the children and what some will call SATAN because they have eaten from the forbidden fruit. He or she has the choice to leave office because they will have little voters available to them, or take a bite from the apple and live a life of rewards Satan can and will provide for a time until they are not needed anymore. The core seems a better course to MR and MS politician and now he goes to the other side, the side which has control over the people within lies, injustice, using secret hidden orders from within to control police, agencies, and others who attempt to go against their policies because they are in control of everything now and they control the very media that the people have become to worship as it's way and passage to truth. A truth which had been controlled and corruption from the very beginning in the safety of the garden of Eden.
 
So who had created this was is the politician who was elected for the good of his people who had great heart and understanding and goals to create change but after the election he had won, whose people refuse to support afterwards who now has been corrupted in order to save his life for a time to then end up serving the order of Satan or....
 
The Industrial who was able to get in because the people refuse to keep watch over the leader they had support in vote who had nothing, the industrial whose idea is just to make as much money they can and who becomes more and more greedy because once they get something it never ends because its not about money any more its about controlling world wealth, population and creating false GODS within the governmental order. The power is more than what NERO ever had ... who allowed them in, was it the people and or politician who had the people and then loss them and became engulf in this nightmare and fed to the GODS OF CAPITAL HILL?
 
So yes going back to the movie sicko which I had not seen but I had interviewed it's author years ago in Chicago because the people loved him because of his movie about the farmers and others, he was someone with a film documentary seeking for the people to see the truth within his media. Then from doing this film came the same issue that cause the politician to loss control and sight of the very problem he was fighting for, the need for the support of the people behind the documented movie to act, then his lack of continuous cash flow from the support of the people, he then has to go to the same types in order to continue to create, within his art form his is indeed telling the truth, by the other way he can within the financial base of the controlled corruption which he thinks once he goes to a level of money he can remove himself from but again their he never a removal time once into it because they now control it all. Representative Skelton is also chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and has the clout to move his bill through the House of Representatives.     “The ACLU is encouraged to see further action in Congress to undo a grave setback to individual liberty and freedom in the Military Commissions Act of 2006,” said Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU’s Legislative Office. “Chairman Skelton deserves praise for spearheading this bipartisan effort. As President Bush’s time in office runs out, the clock for those being held indefinitely at Guantanamo continues to tick. Congress needs to act to restore these fundamental rights for all individuals.”     Two weeks ago, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed S. 185, legislation that also restores habeas rights. With this bipartisan legislation now introduced by the chairman of the House Armed Services, the ACLU is confident that Congress will quickly move forward and pass habeas restoration legislation through both chambers of Congress. The ACLU noted that the newly introduced legislation differs slightly from similar legislation introduced earlier this year, but will work to ensure that the legislation fully restores the rule of law.     “Chairman Skelton today has taken a major step forward in the process to restore our Constitution,” said Christopher Anders, legislative counsel for the ACLU. “Having a bill sponsored by the chairman of the powerful Armed Services Committee means that we will soon see this legislation get through Congress and onto the President’s desk. We expect to see a habeas restoration bill go to the President by this fall. A Summary of the threshold of prima facie evidence is as follows.
I. The attacks of 9/11, as portrayed in the official account, could not have succeeded if standard operating procedures between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and NORAD had been followed. The Pentagon, under the leadership of Donald Rumsfeld, has provided three mutually inconsistent accounts of NORAD's response, which means that at least two of them are false. Moreover, the third account, articulated by the 9/11 Commission, is contradicted by a wide range of facts, including evidence that the FAA had notified NORAD in a timely fashion. There must have been stand-down orders, and these could have come only from the highest levels of the Pentagon and the White House.

Nor could al-Qaeda operatives have obtained command and control of advanced Directed Energy Weapons, Microfusion devices (4th generation mini-nuclear weapons), bunker-busters, or other exotic weapons alternatives that are known to be in the deployment or testing phase in the US Defense arsenal. The controlled demolition and/or Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) or exotic weapons application, therefore, had to be the work of U.S. Government and other insiders. That President Bush was one of those insiders is suggested by the fact that his brother and cousin were principals in the company in charge of WTC security. Complicity at the highest levels of the federal government is also indicated by the removal of evidence (the collapsed steel), which at a crime scene is normally a federal offense. Finally, if the airplane strikes could have occurred only with the consent of the President and the Secretary of Defense (as suggested in the previous point), the coordination of these strikes with the demolition of the buildings - and/or with the use of exotic weapons such as Directed Energy Weapons - implies their involvement in the latter as well.
 
The design of the International Citizen's 9/11 War Crimes Tribunal is to provide a judicial, impartial forum for the evaluation of forensic evidence.
 
At present, there are several alternative, though not mutually exclusive models of how the WTC Towers fell, in a controlled demolition. While there is compelling evidence for one model over another at this time, the purpose of an impartial forum is to allow evidence to be presented. This includes evidence of traditional chemical means of controlled demolition, as well as more exotic means, as warranted by the forensic evidence. The models of controlled demolition to be explored, thus would include at least: traditional thermite and thermate exposives; Microfusion devices (4th generation nuclear weapons); and Directed Energy Weapons (DEW), be they land-based, air-based, or space-based. Correspondence with the USAF Kirtland Base Directed Energy Directorate does not rule out the existence of Directed Energy Weapons in these configurations. III. Overwhelming evidence also exists for the conclusion that the attack on the Pentagon was an inside job. That the official story could not be true is evident from many facts: Alleged hijacker Hani Hanjour's incompetence; the choice of the Pentagon west wing as the target; the impossibility of a commercial airliner's coming back to Washington undetected and hitting the Pentagon unless permitted; and the lack of physical evidence consistent with an attack by a Boeing 757. That the strike was an inside job is implied by the falsity of the official story, the evidence that the strike was made by a military aircraft, the removal of evidence, and the government's refusal to release videos of the strike. This operation could hardly have been planned without the involvement of Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld.
 
9/11 & DU at the Pentagon
 
In April, 2007, Leuren Moret exposed the U.S. military's illegal use of Depleted Uranium (DU) weapons in target practice in Hawaii, in violation of U.S. military environmental regulations. The elevated radiation readings she recorded were carried by ABC-TV news in Hawaii on April 29 & 30, 2007.
 
Leuren Moret reported similar elevated radiation readings downwind from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001. Two days after 9/11, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed that the Pentagon crash site rubble was radioactive and that the probable contaminant was Depleted Uranium (DU). The entry and exit holes through the Pentagon crash site were the signature of a kinetic energy penetrator, such as a Cruise missile, and the term "punch-out hole" was written by crash site investigators over the exit hole. This is a military term used for kinetic energy penetrators. Major Doug Rokke, former Director of the Gulf War I DU Cleanup Team, reported that an email from the Pentagon 30 minutes after impact confirmed a Cruise missile hit the Pentagon on 9/11. Recently vast Uranium deposits have been reported in Khazakhstan and Afghanistan. Khazakhstan is expected to out-produce Canada (now the world's top producer) in Uranium production within 12 years. This exposes the economic interests behind the events of 9/11, specifically the unjustified military attack by the U.S. on Afghanistan using 9/11 as a pretext.
 
IV. Complicity at the highest levels of the federal government is also indicated by President Bush's remaining at the Florida Elementary school after it was evident---given the truth of the official account---that the United States was experiencing a surprise attack. This behavior makes sense only if Bush and his lead Secret Service agent knew that there would be no attack on the school.
 
V. The complicity of Vice President Cheney in the attack on the Pentagon and the downing of Flight 93 is implied by the testimony of Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta in conjunction with the false claims of the 9/11 Commission, under the guidance of administration insider Philip Zelikow, as to when Cheney went to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC) and when he issued the shoot-down authorization.
 
VI. The conclusion from the evidence that members of the Bush administration orchestrated the attacks of 9/11 is reinforced by the fact that they had some huge projects---prosecuting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and obtaining funding to accelerate the technological transformation of the military---that would likely be possible only in the event of "a new Pearl Harbor."
 
The establishment of an International Citizen's 9/11 War Crimes Tribunal is justified, given that official institutions in the U.S. have failed to assign legal accountability for the False Flag Operation of 9/11. Representative John Conyers, Jr., Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee and his senior staff personally reviewed the 9/11 Independent Prosecutor Act and Congressional Memorandum following the 2006 U.S. Mid-term Election and Senior Staff met twice with representatives of the 9/11 Independent Prosecutor Act. The Chairman refused to introduce the Act, despite support for the Act by his Senior Staff. Sending mentally ill soldiers back to Iraq Reckless disregard for soldiers’ welfare and for Iraqi lives By Stephen Soldz 03/27/06 "ICH" -- -- As the US military has difficulties recruiting and retaining soldiers for its never-ending war of occupation in Iraq, the armed services are resorting to increasingly desperate means of coping. The Stop-Loss option in soldiers’ contracts has allowed soldiers to be kept in uniform months or years after their term of service has expired. The National Guard has been sent overseas to a previously unprecedented extent. And military standards have been lowered, so that drug or alcohol abuse, pregnancy, and poor fitness no longer necessarily lead to dismissal of new recruits. Now word comes that “mentally ill” troops are being sent back to Iraq. [See: Some troops headed back to Iraq are mentally ill] This article refers to “a little-discussed truth fraught with implications,” but the implications discussed all have to do with the effects on the soldiers being returned, and these soldiers’ “effectiveness in combat.” In many instances, being returned to combat, and to a state of constant tension, will exacerbate the soldier’s problems, the article -- correctly -- suggests. The article indicates that the military is putting pressure on mental health professionals treating these soldiers to minimize the extent of their problems and to declare them fit for return to Iraq and combat. For example, some Army doctors are reporting that they are being told to diagnose combat-stress reaction instead of the more serious post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Further, the article reports that professionals treating emotionally disturbed soldiers “are under pressure” to approve their redeployment to Iraq. I have written about the moral issues involved in mental health treatment of soldiers in Iraq [To Heal or To Patch: Military Mental Health Workers in Iraq]. The issues are similar for those treating the soldiers when they return if the professionals play any role in deciding whether or not the soldiers should return to combat. The mental health professionals are not in a position to make unbiased judgments as to a soldier’s readiness to return to combat when their own status and advancement in the military may depend upon how they exercise that judgment. One “implication” not even mentioned in the article is that sending “mentally ill” soldiers back into combat puts not only the soldiers’ own mental health at risk, but endangers Iraqis as well. What is the quality of decision-making by highly stressed soldiers, whether they suffer from “PTSD” or only from “combat-stress reaction”? These soldiers are armed with lethal weapons and are often in a position to make split-second life-or-death decisions. After all, “stress” is often used as a defense when other armed authorities, such as police, are caught engaging in abusive or even murderous behavior. Surely the effects of stress can only be magnified on soldiers who spend a year or more being assigned to a country where they can never feel entirely safe. We know from the memoirs of US soldiers in Iraq how alienated from Iraqis they feel. Thus, Colby Buzzell, in his My War: Killing Time in Iraq describes being “hit with the realization that I’m on the other side of the planet far away from home, and that I’m a stranger in a really strange land” (p. 297). These strangers feel so alienated from Iraqis that they have a number of names for them.
